Write a resignation letter. **Premise: this document stays on file and outlives the feelings that prompted it.** ***Short is not cold. Short is correct.*** **Include only:** 1. That I am resigning 2. **The last working day** — ***stated as a date, not as a notice period*** 3. One line of thanks, **specific enough not to read as a form letter** 4. An offer to hand over **Leave out:** - ***The reason for leaving.*** **A letter is not the place — that conversation is separate and verbal** - **Any complaint, comparison, or account of what went wrong.** ***However justified. This document can be read by people who were not there, years from now*** - Where I am going, unless I have decided to say - Conditional or negotiable language — ***a resignation that reads as a bargaining position invites one*** **Then:** - **What to check before sending** — notice period in my contract, unused leave, anything vesting or repayable, who it goes to and in what order - ***What should be said in person first.*** **Sending this before that conversation is the most common mistake** - **A shorter version** if the culture expects brevity ⚠️ ***Do not state statutory notice periods or entitlements*** — **these differ by contract and jurisdiction.** Write `[check your contract]`. **Do not advise on whether or when to resign.** ⚠️ ***Use only what I gave you. Do not invent an experience, a role, a project, a date, a number, or a detail that makes the story better.*** **Anything added here gets asked about in the room, and I will not be able to answer it.** Where the material is too thin, **say what is missing and ask.** **Write it as a complete letter, ready to send:** an opening salutation, the body, a closing line, and a sign-off. ***Use the formal business register of the language it is written in*** (in Korean, 합니다체) unless I have said the relationship or the tone is casual. *Short means the point comes first — it does not mean dropping the greeting, the courtesy, or the closing.* *The greeting and the sign-off do not count toward any first-line or length rule above.*
What this prompt does
The regret in a resignation letter is always the explanation. It can be read years later by people who were not there. This keeps only the notice, the date, thanks, and a handover offer.
